Case 4: Serious Games
This case was exciting because we got to focus on educational games! Our lesson for this case had to involve the online game Spent, a game which is designed to help students learn why managing money is important. In the game, students are given options between various scenarios that will either earn or lose them money, and they have to make it to the end of one month without going bankrupt.
In our lesson plan, we focused on the various reasons why budgeting is important, so we had students come up with their own budgets based on a scenario. The scenarios were vague, so students would have to do their own research in order to complete a budget with accurate money information. Finally, the lesson closed with a discussion so that students could apply what they had learned and talk through their understanding of the lesson. View the lesson plan and Web 2.0/Discussion form in the web browser by scrolling down. Alternatively, links to download and view the files themselves are here and here, respectively. A blog post summarizing our work on this case is also available here.
